In the heart of Odisha, a significant stride towards cultural preservation and tourism enhancement is being taken with the Chausathi Yogini temple in Balangir. This temple, a historical beacon of medieval religious and occult practices, has been selected for comprehensive infrastructure development under the Centre's ambitious 'Pilgrimage Rejuvenation and Spiritual Heritage Augmentation Drive' (PRASHAD) scheme.
Despite its historical significance and steady stream of domestic tourists, especially during peak season, the temple currently lacks basic tourist amenities. This initiative aims to transform the visitor experience while paying homage to India's spiritual legacy.

Boosting Pilgrimage Tourism at Chausathi Yogini Temple
With the successful development of the Puri-Ramachandi-Prachi riverfront in Deuli, the focus has now shifted to similar enhancements at Chausathi Yogini temple. As a site protected by the Archaeological Survey of India and declared as a monument of national importance in 2017, the temple is poised for significant improvements.
The PRASHAD scheme aims to facilitate the growth of pilgrimage tourism by setting up amenities such as visitor centers, parking areas, and souvenir shops, thus augmenting the civil infrastructure and enhancing the overall tourist experience at this ancient site.

An Architectural and Cultural Marvel Awaits Revival
The Chausathi Yogini temple at Ranipur-Jharial, built in sandstone, stands as an embodiment of the unique Chausathi Yogini temples found across the country. It is the second such temple in Odisha, showcasing a 9th or 10th-century architectural grandeur with a 40-feet high hypaethral structure housing a tri-faced deity of Lord Shiva and Parvati, encircled by 64 yoginis.
In 2021, the temple attracted 74,235 domestic tourists, a number that grew to 79,535 the following year. The upcoming infrastructure facilities under the PRASHAD scheme are expected to further increase these numbers as they cater to the needs and comfort of visitors.

The development of infrastructure at the Chausathi Yogini temple under the PRASHAD scheme reflects a commitment to preserving and promoting India's cultural heritage. As the nation witnesses a surge in domestic pilgrimage tourism, efforts such as these are crucial in maintaining the sanctity and accessibility of historic monuments. The temple's revival is anticipated to offer a rejuvenated pilgrimage experience while setting a precedent for the conservation of other cultural landmarks across India.
