Amidst the enchanting Kumaon Himalayas is the small hill town of Dunagiri, which also happens to be in the tourist state of Uttarakhand but yet has not found its place in the map of the tourists. Dunagiri is also known as Drongiri, Dronagiri and also as Doongiri.

The place finds an important place in the mythological history of India. It is believed that many saints and sages had chosen Dunagiri as their abode to attain divine knowledge which could be distributed to the rest of the world. At present this place is slowly emerging as a place to rejuvenate oneself at an altitude of 8800 ft.
Best Time To Visit Dunagiri In Uttarakhand
Dunagiri is a year-around destination in the state of Uttarakhand. However, it is best to avoid visiting during the monsoon months of August and September, as the place witnesses heavy rainfall. The winter months are one of the best times to visit the place.

By Air: The nearest airport is the Pant Nagar Airport which is located at an approximate distance of 141 km from here. The airport has regular flights to Delhi and major cities.
A Paradise In Uttarakhand - Kausani
By Train: The nearest railway station is the Kathgodam Railway Station which is again around 140 km from here and it would take you around another 5 to 6 hours from here to reach Dunagiri by hiring a cab.

By Road: Dunagiri is well connected by roads, with regular bus services to all the major towns and cities across the state. The buses are both owned by the state government and private operators.
What To See?
The temple is located atop a hill at a height of 8200 ft, which provides you a wide view of the Himalayan ranges. Goddess Durga is the presiding deity of the temple, which is believed to be the spot where Hanuman found the Sanjeevani herb which revived Lakshman back to life. Another legend says that the place was a temporary shelter for the Pandavas.

This group of eight temples is said to have been built in the 11th century. The temples are dedicated to Shiva, Durga, Vishnu and a few local deities. It is a very apt place for you if you happen to be a history buff and lover of ancient architecture.
Apart from these two attractions in the place which attracts a lot of visitors, the place is left out wide open for one to explore and find out more in this place which is regarded as paradise on earth. Dunagiri is also very close to the famous temple of Badrinath, which draws lakhs of people.
Dunagiri is one of the least visited places by a typical tourist, who follows the guide maps and is not ready to explore the beautiful state of Uttarakhand and discover its true beauty which still lies hidden to many.
