Mumbai Metro Line 4: The Opening of Mumbai Metro Line 4 has been Delayed, Will Open in November 2026

The opening of Mumbai Metro Line 4 and its extension, Metro 4A, has been delayed once again. The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) now plans to start partial operations on the route between Gaimukh and Cadbury Junction in November 2026.

Mumbai Metro Line 4 Got Delayed

This is the latest in a series of delays for the metro project. Earlier, authorities had planned to open parts of the corridor in phases during 2025. The first section was expected to begin operations in January, followed by further expansion by March. However, various construction challenges and project-related issues prevented these targets from being achieved.

Reasons Behind the Delay

One major reason for the delay was a tragic accident that occurred in February. A parapet slab collapsed at a construction site in Mulund, resulting in a fatality. Following the incident, several important activities related to safety inspections, testing, and certification had to be postponed. This affected the overall project schedule and pushed back the expected launch date.

Despite the delay, officials say that work on the section planned for opening is progressing well. Construction on the Gaimukh-Cadbury Junction stretch is reported to be around 90 percent complete. Most of the major civil and infrastructure work has already been finished, and the remaining tasks are expected to be completed over the coming months.

Another challenge is the proposed Mogharpada depot, which may not be fully ready when services begin. To ensure that metro operations can start on time, authorities are planning temporary maintenance and operational arrangements until the permanent depot is completed.

Successful Trial Runs

Meanwhile, trial runs on the corridor began last year and have been continuing successfully. Several metro trainsets are already positioned on the elevated tracks and are ready for service once all approvals and safety clearances are obtained. Once operational, Metro Line 4 and Metro 4A are expected to improve connectivity in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region and provide a faster, more convenient travel option for thousands of daily commuters.
