Guinness Book of World Records registered Hubballi's name from the South Western Railway zone of Indian Railways as Hubballi now has the world's longest railway platform at its Shree Siddharoodha Swamiji station.

The World record:

At Shree Siddharoodha Swamiji station "Platform Number 8" holds this world record for having the longest railway platform ever with a gigantic length of 1507 m. Two electric engine trains will depart from platform no. 8 and will be possible to run the trains in both directions smoothly.

Now, let us understand a bit about the Shree Siddharoodha Swamiji station at Hubballi. It is considered to be one of the most important junctions in Karnataka because Hubballi is a major trade & commerce center in the North region of Karnataka. It connects the railway lines to Bangalore, the Davanagere side, Hosapete, the Gadag side & Vasco-Da-Gama or Belagavi, which is the Londa side.

Longest Rail Platform

Prime Minister Narendra Modi dedicated the world's longest platform to the nation on Sunday, 12th march, 2023. The Guinness Book of World Records acknowledged this as the world's longest train platform on 2nd March 2023.

About this project:

The platform is a component of the Hubballi Yard renovation or remodeling project. The project's goal is to make it easier to receive and dispatch trains from Shree Siddharoodha Swamiji Hubballi Station. In February 2021, electronic interlocking was successfully installed.

Total Cost:

This platform was built with INR 20.1 crore expenditure as part of the railways' station renovation plan. The construction started in February 2021 and is currently complete. The station serves as a vital crossroads in Karnataka, connecting Hosapete, Vasco-Da-Gama/Belagavi, and Bengaluru.

According to reports, the total cost of these projects is estimated to be around Rs. 520 crores. The aforementioned developments are expected to improve the quality of life by converting the town into a high-tech urban center and creating good hygiene, and functional, as well as safe public spaces.

Motive Behind the construction of this world's longest railway platform:

In order to meet the rising needs of Hubbali city while also anticipating future demands, the railways have chosen to build three extra platforms in addition to their current five existing platforms wherein, platform number 8 has the distinction of being the world's longest railway platform, extending 1,507 m.

Longest Rail Platform

The longest railway platform will increase the yard's operational capacity. It will handle the future demand to hold & run more trains. It will also save passengers valuable time by avoiding the delay of fast trains when they arrive at the station. Trains can run in both directions at the same time on the railways.

While laying another cornerstone for the electrification of the Hosapete-Hubballi-Tinaighat stretch, PM Modi stated that these initiatives will help to increase the region's economic development while also promoting tourism.

Where are the second and third longest railways platforms in the world?

The second-longest platform, measuring 1,366.33 metres, is in Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh, India. Meanwhile, the third-longest platform, measuring 1,180.5 metres, is located at Kollam Junction in Kerala.
