Central Railway has taken a significant step towards enhancing the comfort and convenience of women commuters with the introduction of Women's Powder Rooms at Kanjurmarg station. This initiative, part of the non-fare revenue scheme, aims to prioritize the needs of female passengers during their travel.

Successful Installations and Expansion Plans
The unveiling of the Women's Powder Rooms at Kanjurmarg station follows the successful installations at Mulund and Thane stations. Kanjurmarg, known as one of the busiest suburban stations in Central Railway's Mumbai division, witnesses a daily footfall of around 90,000 commuters. The introduction of these powder rooms is expected to significantly benefit the large number of female passengers who pass through the station on a daily basis.
Amenities Tailored for Women's Comfort
According to railway officials, the Women's Powder Rooms at Thane and Mulund stations are already functional, providing essential amenities tailored specifically for women passengers. These amenities include clean washrooms, hygiene products, and comfortable waiting areas, ensuring a seamless and comfortable travel experience for women.
Expansion Plans and Commitment to Passenger Comfort
The Central Railway spokesperson mentioned that plans are underway to extend this service to other key stations like Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (LTT), Ghatkopar, and Chembur, emphasizing the railway's commitment to ensuring the comfort and well-being of its female commuters across the network.
Understanding the Concept of Powder Rooms
Explaining the concept of Powder Rooms, the spokesperson clarified that these are dedicated spaces for women in public places such as railway stations, petrol pumps, and malls. They provide facilities like toilets, wash basins, and mirrors, allowing women to freshen up, wash their hands, and even apply makeup. Unlike traditional public toilets, Powder Rooms offer more convenience and comfort to women travelers.
Revenue Generation and Operational Details
Under the Non-Fare Revenue initiative, Central Railway's Mumbai Division has planned 'Woloo Women's Powder Room' at several stations. These aspirational toilets, operated and maintained by licensees, are expected to generate revenue of ₹39.48 lakh per annum for a duration of 5 years. Each 'Woloo Women's Powder Room' will consist of four toilets covering 50% of the area, while the remaining 50% will be utilized for retail space.
Focus on Comfort and Convenience
The 'Woloo Women's Powder Room' will be managed by polite and presentable staff, equipped with valid identity cards. Additionally, cashless payment options will be available, further enhancing the convenience for passengers. While the Powder Rooms will be exclusively for ladies, gentlemen will have access to the retail area and will be allowed to use the terrace area if accompanying women. However, the sale or distribution of food items will not be permitted, as the focus remains on providing paid washroom access and retailing non-food items exclusively.
