On the occasion of his 50th visit to Varanasi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced a major development project that will make the people of Kashi proud. A six-lane tunnel will be built under the runway of Lal Bahadur Shastri International Airport. This project is part of the airport's expansion and is inspired by modern infrastructure seen in countries like Singapore.

Tunnel Under Runway to Ease Traffic
This unique tunnel will be about two and a half kilometers long and will allow vehicles to travel underneath the airport's runway. It is being designed to ensure smooth traffic flow even after the airport is expanded. Since the airport will get a new runway, a part of the Varanasi-Lucknow National Highway NH-31 will be affected. To solve this issue, the tunnel will connect from near the airport flyover and emerge on Jaunpur road.
The tunnel will be built with strong safety features. It will be able to handle even high-potential explosives. All vehicles passing through it will go through high-tech security scanning to ensure safety.
Project Cost and Execution Plan
The cost of building the tunnel is estimated to be Rs 650 crores. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) will build the tunnel on behalf of the Airport Authority. The project is expected to be completed within three years.
Divisional Commissioner Kaushal Raj Sharma said that this is a big step in modernizing the city's infrastructure. He explained that with the tunnel and new runway, the airport's capacity will increase. At present, the airport can handle 45 planes. After the project, it will be able to handle up to 110 aircraft. Two planes will also be able to take off or land at the same time, just above the tunnel.
Boost to Airport and City Development
The construction of this tunnel will not only help in better traffic management but will also increase the airport's operation and importance. This development will bring Varanasi closer to becoming a world-class city.
This project shows the government's aim to improve infrastructure across India. By taking ideas from global cities like Singapore, Indian cities like Varanasi are being prepared for the future.
Prime Minister Modi's gift of a six-lane tunnel under Varanasi airport is a huge step forward. With a budget of Rs 650 crores and a target to finish in three years, this project will help traffic and air travel together. For the people of Kashi, it will become a proud symbol of growth and change.
