Direct train service between Jammu and Srinagar will finally begin on April 30, after being delayed several times earlier. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, along with Union Minister of State Jitendra Singh, will flag off the Vande Bharat Express from Jammu Railway Station to the Kashmir Valley.

Flagging Off Vande Bharat between Jammu & Srinagar
Officials said that all preparations are almost complete. The trains and tracks are ready, and successful trial runs have already been carried out. Special attention has also been given to security arrangements. The Railway Minister will be joined by other leaders and senior railway officials during the launch event.
Vande Bharat Extension
At present, two Vande Bharat trains are running between Katra and Srinagar. These services will now be extended to Jammu, and updated timings will be announced soon. Moreover, two similar Vande Bharat trains already operate between New Delhi and Katra.
How will this Vande Bharat Express Benefit?
This new direct train service is expected to improve connectivity between Jammu and Srinagar, reducing travel time between the two cities. The launch is also happening just before government offices shift from Jammu (winter capital) to Srinagar (summer capital). Offices working five days a week will close on April 30, while those with six working days will shut on May 2, and reopen in Srinagar on May 4.
The train service will benefit not only residents but also people travelling from other parts of the country. It will be especially useful during the annual Amarnath Yatra starting on July 3, as pilgrims can travel to Jammu and then take the train to Srinagar.
However, officials noted that trains alone may not handle all passengers, so the Jammu-Srinagar highway will be important. Still, during bad weather when roads are blocked, the train service will provide a reliable travel option. The first Vande Bharat service between Katra and Srinagar was inaugurated by Narendra Modi on June 6, 2025.
