Uttar Pradesh is set to launch an important water transport project that will connect the Kanpur-Bundelkhand region to the meeting point of the Ganga and Yamuna rivers in Prayagraj. This new waterway will cover a distance of 248 km, starting from Panchnad in Kalpi, Jalaun district, and reaching Prayagraj. The project aims to improve connectivity by using the Yamuna River as a transport route. Authorities have requested to include this project under the Kanpur Region Integrated Development Authority (KRIDA) to support its development.

A Step Toward Better Transportation
The main goal of this project is to reduce road traffic, especially heavy vehicles. By using the river for transportation, pollution and road accidents will decrease. The waterway will also make it easier to transport goods and passengers efficiently. This initiative is expected to promote tourism as well, offering people a new way to explore the region.
Why the Yamuna River is Ideal for Water Transport
The Panchnad region, where the Yamuna River meets four other rivers, has a strong water flow, making it perfect for water transport. The presence of rivers like Betwa, Ken, and Mandakini ensures that the water level remains steady throughout the year. This makes it possible to use the waterway for regular transport without major difficulties. The project will connect northern states with Uttar Pradesh, helping to lower environmental pollution caused by road transport.
Key Steps in the Project
The idea for this project was first introduced on March 28, 2024. The plan was to use the waterway for transporting goods from Kanpur's rural areas to Prayagraj. This was part of a strategy to develop Kanpur as a major industrial center. At that time, the Uttar Pradesh Water Transport Authority was still being established, laying the foundation for this important project.
A major part of the plan is to create the Kalpi Inland Waterways Transport Port, located in Kalpi, Jalaun, and Bhognipur, Kanpur Dehat. These locations, only 10 km apart, are on the banks of the Yamuna River. Bhognipur is a key road junction in North India, making it an ideal location for a major transport network.
Government Support and Future Plans
The project has received strong support from high-ranking officials and development committees. Neeraj Srivastava, the Coordinator of the high-level development committee, has formally requested the government to evaluate and approve the project under KRIDA. Divisional Commissioner K. Vijayendra Pandian has shown great interest in this project, calling it a transformational step for transportation in Uttar Pradesh.
Benefits of the Water Transport System
This water transport project will bring many advantages:
- Reduced road congestion: Fewer trucks and heavy vehicles on the roads.
- Lower fuel consumption: Water transport is more fuel-efficient than road transport.
- Less pollution: A decrease in smoke and emissions from vehicles.
- Better connectivity: Improved access to Jhansi, Chitrakoot, and Kanpur's defense and industrial zones.
A New Era of Transportation in Uttar Pradesh
This waterway project is expected to change the way people and goods travel in Uttar Pradesh. By using the Yamuna River as a transport route, the state can reduce road traffic and pollution while making transportation cheaper and more efficient. As the project develops, it could become a model for integrating water transport into India's infrastructure, creating a sustainable and modern transport system for the future.
