Patna Metro Underground Line II Nears Completion by 2026, With Four TBMs Advancing Twin Tunnels

The underground section of Corridor II, also known as the North-South or Blue Line, of the Patna Metro Rail project is expected to be completed by the end of 2026. Construction work is progressing steadily, with heavy tunnelling activity continuing beneath some of the city's busiest and most crowded areas.

Underground Stretch of Patna Metro

This underground stretch is 7.9 km long and runs from a ramp near Rajendra Nagar to Patna Junction, and serves as an interchange station between Corridor I and Corridor II. The section includes six underground metro stations. Engineers involved in the project stated that most of the tunnelling work has already been completed, and only around 2 km remains to be bored. To speed up construction, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has deployed four Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) to dig twin tunnels along the route.

Completion of Tunnel

So far, a 5-km tunnel has been completed from the Moin-ul-Haq Stadium side toward PMCH. On the other end, a 1.2-km stretch from Akashvani is almost complete and is close to reaching Gandhi Maidan station. One TBM launched from Moin-ul-Haq Stadium achieved a breakthrough at PMCH on December 10. The remaining work includes two short sections, 900 metres each, one between PMCH and Gandhi Maidan, and the other between Moin-ul-Haq Stadium and Rajendra Nagar.

Completion of the Underground Work

Officials from Patna Metro Rail Corporation are confident that the underground work will be completed by 2026. Once completed, it will connect with the elevated priority section of Corridor II, where partial services began in October 2025. This will allow metro trains to run along the full 14-km route from Patna Junction to the Patliputra Inter-State Bus Terminal.

Construction of Underground Stations

Construction of all six underground stations is progressing at the same time. About 40% of the total civil work is done, with station designs focusing on safety, comfort, and easy access for passengers.
