Tinkesh Kaushik, a 30-year-old fitness coach from Goa, has made history as the world's first triple amputee to reach the Mount Everest Base Camp, which stands at a staggering 17,598 feet above sea level. This remarkable achievement was announced by a private disability rights organization, highlighting Kaushik's extraordinary journey completed on May 11. Despite losing both limbs below the knees and a hand in an electrocution accident at age 9, Kaushik's mental fortitude propelled him to conquer this challenge.

Avelino D'Souza, the chief of the Disability Rights Association of Goa (DRAG), expressed immense pride in Kaushik's achievement, stating it has brought honor to Goa. Kaushik, who now uses prosthetic limbs, moved to Goa several years ago to begin his career as a fitness coach, demonstrating that physical limitations do not define one's capabilities.

Before embarking on the trek to Everest Base Camp, Kaushik admitted to underestimating the challenge due to his professional background. "I did not have any prior experience in mountaineering. I prepared for that before going for the base camp. I am a fitness coach by profession and thought it will be an easy trek for me," he shared. However, the reality of the arduous trek soon set in, with Kaushik facing significant pain and challenges from the outset due to his amputations and the need to use prosthetic limbs.
Despite facing acute mountain sickness during his journey, Kaushik's resolve remained unshaken. He credits his mental strength for allowing him to complete the trek, a sentiment echoed in a heartfelt Instagram post marking his achievement. "Today, the 11th of May 2024, I completed the challenge of trekking to Everest Base Camp. As the first Triple Amputee with 90 per cent Locomotor disability to have achieved this feat, it was a very emotional moment for me. I did it for myself and I did it for a cause. I thank everyone who supported me, to make this a reality. Thank you from the bottom of my heart," Kaushik wrote.
Through his journey, Kaushik has not only challenged his physical limits but also served as an inspiration for many. His story is a testament to the human spirit's ability to overcome adversity, demonstrating that with determination and support, even the highest peaks can be reached.
