Mumbai's suburban railway is preparing to test 18-car local trains in January, considered a big step toward increasing the number of passengers that trains can carry. Right now, most local trains in the city have 12 cars, and only a few have 15 cars. But because so many people use

these trains every day, more than 75 lakh commuters, railway officials want to see if longer trains can be operated safely on busy routes.
Western Railway
The Western Railway has scheduled important safety trials on the Virar-Dahanu Road section in Palghar district. These tests are expected to take place on January 14 and 15. Two different 18-car train sets will be tested in separate trials. One type of train set has electrical equipment from Bombardier, and it will be tested at speeds up to 110 km/h. The other has equipment from Medha Electricals, and it will run up to 105 km/h during the trials.
Trial Runs
The trial runs will focus on safety checks that must be done before a new train setup can enter regular service. These include the Emergency Braking Distance (EBD) test, which checks how quickly a train can stop in an emergency, and the Coupler Force test, which measures the forces between the cars during braking.
Before the trials begin, the trains will be updated and loaded properly so they are ready for tests of speed, stability, and movement. Officials say these tests do not automatically mean 18-car local trains will start running right away, but they are an important step toward that goal.
If successful, 18-car trains could help reduce crowding and improve travel on one of the country's busiest railway networks, benefiting millions of daily commuters.
