The Collision at Kankatapalli: A Grim Sequence of Events
A senior official of the East Coast Railway has reported that the collision occurred when the Palasa Passenger train rear-ended the Rayagada Passenger train at Kankatapalli, resulting in the derailment of three coaches. The impact of this incident has been profoundly distressing, impacting the lives of passengers and railway staff alike.

Injured Rushed to Hospitals: The Ongoing Relief Efforts
Around 18 to 20 people sustained injuries in the collision. They are being promptly transferred to hospitals in Visakhapatnam and Vizianagaram for medical attention. Dr. S Appala Naidu, the Superintendent of the Government General Hospital In-Charge, Vizianagaram, stated, "Ambulances have been dispatched to the accident sites, and as of now, we have received 20 injured people, with three in serious condition. Additional ambulances are en route, so the number of injured persons might increase."
Dr. Naidu further explained, "As of now, we haven't received any bodies in the hospital, but there are reports of passenger fatalities related to this tragic incident."
The Location and Train Details
The mishap occurred between Alamanda and Kantakapalli in the Vizianagaram-Kottavalasa Railway Section of the Waltair Division of the East Coast Railway Zone at approximately 1900 hours. The trains involved in the accident were identified as train number 08532 Visakhapatnam-Palasa Passenger and train number 08504 Visakhapatnam-Rayagada Passenger Special. Initial reports suggest that the Rayagada passenger train had overshot the signal, leading to this catastrophic collision.
Rescue Operations and Assistance
Rescue operations are underway, with DRM/Waltair and his dedicated team actively involved at the accident site. Accidents Relief Trains and other essential rescue equipment have been mobilized to the scene to aid in the relief efforts. Divisional Railway Manager Saurabh Prasad has reached the site to oversee and coordinate the ongoing operations.

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister's Intervention
Andhra Pradesh Minister Botcha Satyanarayana has arrived at the site and is actively supervising the ongoing rescue operations. Additionally, senior officials from the Vizianagaram district have been dispatched to the scene to assess the situation and monitor the progress of the rescue efforts.
Challenges in Relief Efforts
The relief operations are currently challenged by the cover of darkness, which hinders the rescue and recovery efforts. However, the East Coast Railway has established helplines to facilitate coordination and communication. Local administration and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have been alerted to provide assistance, and ambulances and accident relief trains have been deployed to the site.
CM's Directive: A Swift Response
Expressing shock and concern over the incident, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y. S. Jagan Mohan Reddy has instructed officials to undertake immediate and efficient rescue operations. He has directed the provision of an adequate number of ambulances to transport the injured, prioritizing their medical care during this critical period.
