The Government of Gujarat has ordered 34 new metro train sets to improve urban rail transport in the state. Out of these, 10 train sets will be used for Ahmedabad Metro Phase II, while the remaining 24 will operate on the upcoming Surat Metro network. These metro trains will be

manufactured at the advanced production facility of Titagarh Rail Systems located in Kolkata. The order is expected to support the expansion of metro services and help meet growing public transport demand in the state.
Ahmedabad Metro Network
The Ahmedabad Metro network has expanded steadily over the past few years. Both Phase-1 and Phase-2 projects are already operational, improving connectivity across major parts of the region. Currently, the metro network connecting Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar covers about 68.2 km. Around 32 metro train sets are already running on this route to serve daily commuters.
Development of Metro Rail Systems
The idea of developing metro rail systems in Ahmedabad and Surat was first proposed during the tenure of Narendra Modi when he was the Chief Minister of Gujarat. Since then, the projects have gradually taken shape as part of the state's long-term urban transport planning.
Metro System in Surat
At the same time, construction work on the Surat Metro is progressing quickly. The upcoming metro system in Surat will have a network of about 40.3 km and is expected to significantly improve travel within the city once it becomes operational.
Moreover, Gujarat's metro rail network currently stretches for nearly 108 km. In the coming years, it is expected to expand further to around 190 km. Future plans also include a metro line connecting the airport and possible metro projects in other cities such as Rajkot and Vadodara.
The newly ordered metro trains will feature modern technology such as automated operations, real-time monitoring systems, intelligent braking, and improved passenger safety systems. These will include CCTV surveillance and fire detection features to ensure a safer and more efficient travel experience for commuters.
