Tirumala Temple Chief Priest Clarification on Break in Darshan During Gold Plating Works

The auspicious darshan of Mula Virat would continue as usual, according to one of the head priests of the Tirumala temple, Venugopala Deekshithulu, who refuted rumors that the hill shrine will be closed for six months due to gold plating work at Ananda Nilayam.

One of the Tirumala temple's top priests, Venugopal Dikshitulu, clarified the situation by stating that the board has agreed to begin the gold plating of the Anandanilaya Gopuram on 1st March 2023, and finish it within six months.

According to him, Balalayam would be set up by a temporary (Daru) idol one week before the start of the gold plating activities, as is customary in temples. The devotees will still be able to see Mula Virat (Lord Venkateswara, the temple's presiding deity) during the six months, but according to agama tradition, the Arjitha Sevas, which are performed daily from Suprabatham before dawn to Ekantha Seva before the temple closes at night, will take place in Ekantham.

He said that according to the Tirumala temple records, the gold plating was last completed in 1957-1958 and that Balalayam was constructed in 2018 during which time Arjitha Sevas for Utsava idols and Srivari Mula Murti Darshan were continuously performed.

The Ananda Nilayam underwent over eight years of gold plating before it was finally completed in 1958. Pallava king Vijaya Dantivarman initially applied gold plating in 839 AD. According to the available data, the gold plating has been changed or replaced seven times since then.

TTD records indicate that 12 tonnes of copper and approximately 12,000 tolas (or 120 kg) of pure gold were utilized for the gold plating in 1950.

The TTD urged devotees not to believe and rely on such misleading publicity about the closure of Srivari darshan for six months, putting an end to the rumours floating around on the closure of darshan, in light of the temple administration's examination of Agama procedures.
