Central Delhi will lean on the Metro this week as BRICS motorcades trigger sweeping road diversions from September 11 to 13. Delhi Police’s advisory flags more than 35 roads under controls and 22 diversion points across New Delhi and key south connectors. Expect longer surface commutes and plan buffers, especially around VIP arrivals and departures across the three summit days.
Police have urged residents to prioritise trains over cars. “In view of the movement of international dignitaries during the BRICS Summit 2026, traffic may be temporarily regulated/diverted on certain roads in and around New Delhi,” the advisory says. The summit convenes at Bharat Mandapam on September 12 and 13, with motorcade rehearsals already adding intermittent slowdowns this week. Factor that into meetings, flights, and station transfers.

Use resilient interchange hubs to cut through bottlenecks. Kashmere Gate balances multiple lines and disperses crowds well. Rajiv Chowk is central but may face gate controls for crowd management. Hauz Khas speeds Yellow–Magenta transfers for South–Gurugram routes. Expect heavy footfall near Supreme Court (Pragati Maidan), Central Secretariat and Mandi House; add 15–30 minutes and track DMRC and Delhi Traffic Police posts before travelling.
Traffic diversions: roads to avoid
Restrictions are flagged on Mathura Road, Subramaniam Bharti Marg, Tej Bahadur Road, Janpath, Sardar Patel Marg, Akbar Road, Ashoka Road, Kautilya Marg, Bhagwan Das Road, Mother Teresa Crescent, Rajesh Pilot Marg, Safdarjung Road and Neela Gumbad. Measures also extend around Connaught Place, Mandi House, Lodhi Road, Barakhamba Road and Dr Zakir Hussain Road. Roadside parking within 200 metres of controlled roads is barred during the summit window.
For airport trips, choose the Airport Express Line from New Delhi and switch at Aerocity. Rail travellers should prefer the Metro to New Delhi or Old Delhi stations, using interchanges rather than cabs in the core zone. Arrangements can change at short notice between September 11 and 13, so refresh DMRC and Delhi Police updates on X just before leaving.
