The Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the proposed Thiruvananthapuram Metro is in its final stage, with Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) carrying out a technical review before submitting it to the Kerala government. After the report is submitted, the state government will take the final decision on the metro's alignment.

Thiruvananthapuram Metro Project
According to KMRL officials, experts are carefully checking the technical details of the DPR to ensure the report is accurate and complete before handing it over to the government.
Earlier, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) prepared the DPR and proposed a fully elevated 31-km metro corridor. This proposal had already received in-principle approval from the previous state government.
Demand for Thiruvananthapuram Underground Metro
However, the plan for a completely elevated metro has led to demands for underground sections in some of Thiruvananthapuram's busiest areas. Many people believe that underground construction would reduce traffic disruptions during construction, require less land acquisition, and help protect the city's appearance.
MP Shashi Tharoor's Appeal to Kerala's CM
Congress MP Shashi Tharoor has written to the Chief Minister, requesting that the metro be built underground in heavily populated stretches such as Karamana to Ulloor and Kazhakkoottam to Akkulam. He said underground routes would improve connectivity to important locations, including Technopark, MG Road and Government Medical College, while preserving the city's urban landscape.
Tharoor also urged the government to hold wider public consultations before giving final approval to the project. He said the metro is urgently needed to reduce traffic congestion in the capital city.
In his letter, Tharoor suggested that the government should also announce a long-term metro expansion plan. He proposed extending the network to Technocity, Vizhinjam International Seaport, and the eastern parts of the city over the next five to eight years. He also recommended preparing a strong last-mile connectivity plan so passengers can easily travel to and from metro stations.
The proposed metro corridor will include stations at Pappanamcode, Kaimanam, Karamana, Killipalam, Thampanoor, Secretariat, Palayam, Pattom, Medical College, Ulloor, Sreekaryam, Karyavattom, Technopark Phases I, II and III, Akkulam Lake, Kochuveli, Veli, Chacka, Airport and Enchakkal, which will serve as the terminal station.
