A proposal has been made to extend the proposed Thiruvananthapuram Metro from Pappanamcode to Nemom to provide better public transport connectivity to the southern parts of the city. An MLA has raised the demand, saying that Nemom should be included in the metro network as the area has been developing rapidly and has a large number of daily commuters.
Thiruvananthapuram Metro Project
The proposed Thiruvananthapuram Metro is being planned as an important public transport project for the capital city. The current Phase I alignment is around 31 km long and will have 27 stations. It is planned to connect several important locations, including Technopark, Thiruvananthapuram International Airport, Thampanoor bus terminal and railway station, the Secretariat, and Government Medical College.
The demand to extend the line to Nemom is not new. Residents' associations in the area had earlier requested the government and metro authorities to consider including Nemom in the first phase. They argued that the southern suburb has witnessed considerable residential and commercial growth and has emerged as an important urban centre.
If the metro is extended from Pappanamcode to Nemom, thousands of people travelling between the southern suburbs and central Thiruvananthapuram could benefit. It could provide commuters with a faster and more convenient alternative to road transport while also helping reduce traffic congestion on busy routes.
The proposed change would require the authorities to examine the technical and financial feasibility of modifying the approved alignment. Officials would also need to consider factors such as construction requirements, passenger demand, and project costs before taking a final decision.
