Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) is expected to require 17 additional train rakes as the metro network expands towards Kakkanad and Cochin International Airport. The additional trains will be important to manage the expected rise in passenger numbers once the upcoming extensions become operational.
Kochi Metro Corridor
The Kochi Metro is currently expanding its network beyond the existing Aluva-Thrippunithura corridor. Phase II will connect JLN Stadium with Infopark through Kakkanad. The 11.2-km extension is planned with several stations serving important residential, commercial, and employment areas. The project is expected to improve connectivity to Kakkanad, which has become a major IT and business hub.
The proposed airport extension will further expand the metro network towards Cochin International Airport. The planned Phase III corridor will connect Aluva with the airport and extend towards Angamaly. According to the latest plan, the line will run along NH 544, enter an underground section near the airport, and have an underground terminal station at the airport. It will then continue towards Angamaly.
With these extensions, KMRL expects passenger demand to increase significantly. More train rakes will therefore be required to maintain comfortable services and suitable frequencies on the expanded network.
The additional trains will also help KMRL handle higher traffic during peak hours. Better frequency will be particularly important for commuters travelling to offices and Infopark in Kakkanad, as well as passengers using the metro to reach the airport.
The airport extension is also expected to improve connections between the metro, railway and airport services. Plans for the region include better integration of different modes of transport, making travel more convenient for passengers.
