A significant move towards sustainable energy practices: the Uttar Pradesh government has unveiled plans to convert 17 major cities in the state into solar cities. Among these, the revered cities of Ayodhya and Varanasi are set to play pivotal roles in this transformative initiative.
Solar Cities and Beyond
The ambitious initiative begins with the development of solar cities, with Ayodhya taking the lead as the inaugural solar city. The government envisions replicating this model in other cities across the state, creating a ripple effect of solar energy adoption. Not stopping there, the government has outlined plans to extend this solar revolution to villages, marking a comprehensive approach towards harnessing the potential of solar power.

Ayodhya's Solar Initiatives
Efforts are already in full swing to establish Ayodhya as a solar city, with significant progress witnessed in the installation of solar infrastructure. The Chief Minister's office reported that Ayodhya has already become a beacon of solar energy production, generating an impressive 14 MW of solar energy. An additional 40 MW capacity has been installed, with production set to commence shortly.
Ayodhya, the cultural heart of Uttar Pradesh, is embracing solar energy with enthusiasm. The city has seen the successful implementation of solar-powered streetlights, totaling over 2,500 installations. These efforts align with Ayodhya's commitment to sustainability, a sentiment echoed by Energy Minister A K Sharma.
In January, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath inaugurated a solar boat service in Ayodhya, further emphasizing the city's dedication to renewable energy solutions. The city has already integrated solar power into its infrastructure, with solar-powered ATMs and solar trees adorning 40 intersections.

Varanasi's Rooftop Solar Revolution
Following Ayodhya's strides, Varanasi is gearing up for its own solar revolution. The city is set to witness the installation of 25,000 rooftop solar plants across government buildings, marking a significant leap towards solar innovation. This initiative positions Varanasi as a key player in Uttar Pradesh's solar mission.
Uttar Pradesh's Energy Minister, A K Sharma, expressed confidence in the state's commitment to becoming a leader in the solar energy domain. Ayodhya's successful foray into solar energy sets a precedent for other cities to follow suit, fostering a sustainable and eco-friendly future for Uttar Pradesh.
As solar cities and villages take shape across the state, Uttar Pradesh is poised to emerge as a frontrunner in harnessing the power of the sun to meet its energy needs. The transition to solar energy reflects a collective commitment towards a cleaner and greener tomorrow.
