Tamil Nadu Rain Alert: Several Parts of Tamil Nadu are Likely to Experience Rainfall & Thunderstorms

Several parts of Tamil Nadu are likely to continue receiving rain and thunderstorms this week, especially along the north coast. The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) has forecast isolated heavy rainfall in parts of north coastal Tamil Nadu over the next two days. Evening thundershowers are expected to remain common because of wind convergence.

Tamil Nadu Rain Alert

Rain has become a regular feature of Tamil Nadu's weather in August. Light to moderate rainfall is expected in many parts of the State, particularly around the Western Ghats, until August 23.

On Tuesday, Chengalpattu and Villupuram districts may receive heavy rain at one or two places. Gusty winds of around 40-50 kmph are also possible during the rainfall. Moderate rain may occur at a few places across north coastal Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal on Tuesday and Wednesday.

On Wednesday, the possibility of isolated heavy rain may extend to more districts, including the Nilgiris, Chennai, Chengalpattu, Tiruvallur and Villupuram. Other areas may receive light rain accompanied by thunderstorms during the week.

V.R. Durai, Head of the Regional Weather Forecasting Centre at the RMC, said a depression over the north Bay of Bengal is expected to create wind convergence. This weather condition will help maintain the rainy spell, particularly over north coastal Tamil Nadu.

However, the weather could be very hot in interior districts such as Tiruchi, Madurai and Karur. According to the RMC, moisture from the coast is unlikely to move far inland. Coastal areas, including Chennai, may also record temperatures slightly above normal. However, the evening sea breeze is expected to provide some relief and prevent temperatures from rising further.

Rainfall has been recorded in different parts of Tamil Nadu since the beginning of August. This has helped keep the State's overall rainfall deficit within the normal range for the season. On Monday, Puzhal and Madhavaram in Chennai received around 1 cm of rain each. Light rain was also reported in parts of Coimbatore and Kanniyakumari districts.

Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has asked people to provide online feedback about the usefulness of its heatwave alerts. The survey will remain open until September 13.
