Mumbai's Rainfall Records

Rainfall has continued across Mumbai, although the intensity has remained low. Between Sunday and Monday morning, the IMD's Santacruz station recorded 5.8 mm of rain, while Colaba received 1.6 mm. The eastern suburbs received the highest rainfall during this period, with an average of 8.18 mm. The western suburbs recorded around 5 mm, while the island city received about 1.5 mm.

Mumbai Rain Alert; El Niño Conditions Getting Weaker

Mumbai has not experienced heavy rainfall so far in August. Until August 17, Santacruz had recorded 255 mm of rain, which is only around 45 per cent of the city's average August rainfall of 560.8 mm.

The weaker rainfall comes as the El Niño weather pattern strengthens. The system usually reduces monsoon rainfall in India and is expected to intensify further in the coming months. The US-based National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has said there is a 69 per cent chance that the developing El Niño could become stronger than any recorded since 1950.

However, Mumbai received exceptionally heavy rain in July. Between July 1 and 30, Santacruz recorded 1,491.9 mm of rainfall, which was 66 per cent above the monthly average. Mumbai received 2,160.8 mm of rain between June and August 17, reaching about 90 per cent of its average monsoon rainfall of 2,390.5 mm.

Despite moderate rainfall in August, the city's water supply remains comfortable. The seven lakes supplying drinking water to Mumbai held around 13.33 lakh million litres on Monday, equal to 92.16 per cent of their total storage capacity.
