The recent powerful earthquake that hit Taiwan and Japan has caused significant destruction in both countries. On April 2, 2024, Taiwan's eastern coast experienced a 7.4-magnitude earthquake, the strongest tremor to hit the island in 25 years.

In Taiwan, the earthquake caused casualties and severe damage to buildings, particularly in Hualien County. Sadly, at least four people lost their lives, and many buildings collapsed or were severely damaged. Additionally, a small tsunami was triggered by the quake, adding to the destruction.
In response to the earthquake, Japan's Meteorological Agency issued tsunami warnings for the Okinawa Islands, Miyakojima, and the Yaemama area. Residents in coastal areas of Japan's Okinawa Prefecture were advised to evacuate immediately due to the threat of tsunami waves reaching up to 10 feet.
Fortunately, Taiwan's preparedness for earthquakes helped in a quick recovery from the initial panic. Despite the destruction, the island is accustomed to such seismic events.
Following the earthquake, Japan's Meteorological Agency downgraded the tsunami warning issued for Miyakojima and Okinawa islands to an advisory. However, the situation remains critical, and authorities are closely monitoring the developments.
Additionally, the Philippines issued a tsunami warning for coastal areas across several provinces, including the Batanes Group of Islands, Cagayan, Ilocos Norte, and Isabela. Residents in these areas have been strongly advised to evacuate to higher grounds or move further inland to ensure their safety.
The earthquake, with an estimated magnitude of 7.5, occurred shortly before 9 am, prompting the Japan Meteorological Agency to identify its epicenter near Taiwan. Intensity levels of 5+ and 5- were reported in various regions across Taiwan, indicating the widespread impact of the earthquake.
As the affected regions continue to assess and respond to the aftermath of the earthquake, the focus remains on ensuring the safety and well-being of residents and minimizing further damage.
