South Western Railway has officially announced that Train No. 16511, the KSR Bengaluru-Kannur Express, will be extended to Kozhikode to improve travel convenience for rail passengers.

New Extended Services between Kozhikode & Bengaluru
This new extension is significant because it will be the first direct train link between Kozhikode and Bengaluru. Earlier, the Kannur-Yeshvantpur daily train via Palakkad stopped at Kozhikode, but there was no dedicated direct service. Another option, the Mangaluru Central-Yeshvantpur weekly train, takes a longer, less convenient route through Kuppam and Bangarpet, making travel more difficult.
Commuter's Opinions
For many people living far from home, even a small change in train services can bring great relief. Ashwin Pavery, originally from Kozhikode but now living in Bengaluru, expressed happiness after hearing that the Kannur-Bengaluru train via Hassan has been extended to Kozhikode. He said that having a second daily train will make it easier for people to travel home, spend time with family, and celebrate festivals together. It also reduces the feeling of being stuck far away from loved ones.
Ashwin's feelings are shared by thousands of people from the Malabar region who have moved to Bengaluru for studies and jobs. Due to limited train options, many of them have struggled to stay connected with their hometowns.
Delayed Implementation
Kozhikode Member of Parliament M K Raghavan shared that he had been working on this project for a long time. He had secured a no-objection certificate from the South Western Railway in 2023. Although the Railway Board approved the extension in February 2024, the implementation was delayed due to technical issues.
With the extension finally happening, passengers can now look forward to easier and more comfortable journeys between Kozhikode and Bengaluru.
