To tackle the issue of overcharging tourists in Sikkim, the state government has implemented important measures to regulate taxi fares between Gangtok and Nathula. An official order issued by C. S. Rao, Principal Secretary of the Tourism and Civil Aviation Department, has set the round-trip fares for both normal and luxury vehicles. The round-trip fare for a normal vehicle from Gangtok to Nathula is fixed at Rs 6,000, and for a luxury vehicle, it is set at Rs 7,000. These fares include permit charges.
Tourists have frequently complained about high prices charged by tour operators in Sikkim. In response, the state government has decided to regulate taxi fares for trips between the capital, Gangtok, and the popular Nathula Pass. The new fare regulations are also applicable to trips to Tsomgo Point and Baba Mandir Point and are effective immediately. Strict actions will be taken against travel operators or others who violate these rules under the relevant provisions of the Central Motor Vehicle Act 1988, the CMV Rules 1989, and the Sikkim Motor Vehicles Rules 1991. This means that anyone found charging more than the fixed rates will face legal consequences.
In addition to setting the taxi fares, the state government has also increased the daily limit for Nathula permits to 800 vehicles. This decision, made in a high-level meeting on May 24, will be in effect until June 30. The aim of these new regulations is to ensure that tourism thrives by making visitors feel valued and welcomed.
With the new fares in place, it is expected that more tourists will visit Sikkim, knowing that they will not be overcharged for their trips to popular destinations like Nathula Pass.
