Kashmir's much-awaited first snowfall of the season arrived on Friday, transforming the region into a mesmerizing winter wonderland. The snowfall, caused by a western disturbance, covered the plains, including Srinagar, in a white blanket, creating a picturesque landscape that delighted locals and tourists alike. The snowfall not only brought scenic beauty but also offered relief from a prolonged dry spell, reviving tourism and improving conditions for agriculture and horticulture.

The snowfall was a welcome relief for Kashmir's residents, who had faced challenges during the dry season, including low water levels and increased illnesses like coughs and colds. Yawar Hussain, a local, expressed his happiness: "We had been waiting for snow for a long time. The dry season caused many difficulties, but now, the snow brings relief."

Tourists visiting Kashmir were overjoyed by the snowfall. Priya, a tourist, said, "This is a sight to behold. Witnessing snowfall in Srinagar feels surreal and like a dream come true." Another visitor, Pankaj Kumar, shared his excitement: "This trip has become unforgettable. The snowfall is magical, and we are thrilled to be here."

Regions Covered by Snow

The snowfall extended to various districts, including Ganderbal, Anantnag, Kulgam, Shopian, and Pulwama. Renowned tourist destinations like Gulmarg, Sonamarg, Pahalgam, and areas in Bandipora, Baramulla, and Kupwara also experienced the season's first snow. Higher altitudes, including the Zojila axis, Sadhna Top, and Mughal Road, were blanketed in snow, adding to the region's charm.

While the snowfall brought joy, it also caused some challenges on the roads. Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, who drove from Jammu to Srinagar during the snowfall, described the conditions as difficult. Around 2,000 vehicles were stranded between the Banihal tunnel and Qazigund due to icy roads. Local authorities are actively working to clear the roads, allowing heavy vehicles to pass after snow clearance efforts.
