In a significant development for Indian Muslims planning to embark on the sacred pilgrimage of "Umrah" to Makkah, Saudi Arabia has revised its visa regulations and increased dedicated flights to enhance the overall pilgrimage experience. The Saudi Minister of Hajj and Umrah, Tawfig Bin Fawzan Al-Rabiah, shared insights into the changes in an exclusive interview with Hindustan Times.

Pilgrimage Simplified: New Visa Regulations
To facilitate Indian "Umrah" pilgrims, Saudi Arabia has introduced revisions to visa regulations. The notable change is that Indian Muslims will no longer require a specific visa for the pilgrimage. Instead, they can utilize their existing work or tourism visas to perform "Umrah." This move is aimed at streamlining the pilgrimage process and eliminating the need for a separate visa application.
Increased Flights and Strategic Agreements
Saudi Arabia has also bolstered its efforts to accommodate the surge in "Umrah" pilgrims from India by increasing the number of dedicated flights. Direct flights from various Indian airports to Jeddah and Madinah have witnessed a substantial increase. Furthermore, the Saudi government has entered into agreements to augment the frequency of dedicated flights further, ensuring smoother travel for Indian pilgrims.
Growing Demand: Statistics and Expectations
In 2024, an estimated 1.37 million Indian Muslims are expected to embark on the "Umrah" pilgrimage, reflecting the growing demand for spiritual journeys. Notably, more than 1.2 million pilgrims have already performed "Umrah" in 2023, underscoring the significance of these recent changes.
Visa Categories for Umrah Pilgrimage: Simplifying the Options

Saudi Arabia has introduced six distinct visas and travel options to cater to Indians intending to perform "Umrah." These options provide flexibility and cater to various travel preferences. Here are the categories:
1. Umrah Package via Nusuk Electronic Platform: Pilgrims can conveniently book their "Umrah" package through the Nusuk electronic platform.
2. Personal Visit Visa: Exclusive invitations from Saudi citizen friends and acquaintances can be obtained through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs website.
3. Visa on Arrival: US, UK, or Schengen visa holders can avail visa on arrival facilities.

6. Electronic Transit Visa:Passengers transiting through Saudia Airlines or Flynas can obtain an electronic transit visa through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs website.

Enhanced Flexibility: Extended Visa Duration
As part of the visa revisions, the Umrah visa duration has been extended to 90 days, providing pilgrims with a more flexible timeline for their journey. Additionally, Indian pilgrims can now obtain a stopover visa, further enhancing the overall flexibility and convenience of the pilgrimage process.
Promoting Gender Equality and Safety
The revisions in visa regulations and the introduction of user-friendly e-visa systems aim to promote gender equality, creating a safer and more inclusive environment for women traveling for "Umrah" independently.
Kingdom's Efforts to Attract Pilgrims
