Samruddhi Mahamarg to Open June 5, Slashing Mumbai–Nagpur Travel Time to 8 Hours

The long-awaited final stretch of the Nagpur-Mumbai Super Communication Expressway, known as the 'Samruddhi Mahamarg', is ready to open. On June 5, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis will inaugurate the last 76-kilometre part of this expressway. This section connects Igatpuri in Nashik to Amane in Thane, completing the 701-kilometre high-speed corridor. Starting the same day, vehicles will be allowed to use the entire route.

Completion of the Final Section

Anil Gaikwad, the managing director of Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC), confirmed that all work on this stretch is now finished. The project was built in partnership with the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) at a cost of Rs 1,182 crore. It includes three major interchanges located at Igatpuri, Kutghar in Shahapur, and Amane near Thane.

This new section also features India's longest road tunnel, stretching 7.8 kilometres through Kasara Ghat. Before this upgrade, drivers had to climb 450 metres using winding roads. Now, that climb is reduced to just 160 metres, making travel smoother and safer.

Faster Travel Time

One of the biggest changes is the reduced travel time. The journey from Igatpuri to Amane, which used to take around 90 minutes, will now only take about 40 minutes. With this section now open, the full Samruddhi Mahamarg will allow travellers to go from Nagpur to Mumbai in just eight hours instead of 16.

Highlights of the Expressway

The total cost of the Samruddhi Mahamarg project is Rs 55,000 crore. It is designed for high-speed travel up to 150 kmph and includes major infrastructure: 33 large bridges, 274 smaller bridges, 65 flyovers, and six tunnels. The full name of the expressway is Hindu Hrudaysamrat Balasaheb Thackeray Maharashtra Samruddhi Mahamarg. This grand project was planned under the leadership of CM Fadnavis.

The journey to complete this expressway had some challenges. In the beginning, there was resistance from farmers regarding land acquisition. However, work progressed step by step. Prime Minister Narendra Modi opened the Nagpur-Shirdi section in December 2022. Later, CM Eknath Shinde launched the Shirdi-Bharvir section in May 2023. In March 2024, the Bharvir-Igatpuri stretch was opened by MSRDC minister Dada Bhuse.

Boost to Connectivity and Economy

This expressway goes through ten districts and 390 villages across Maharashtra. It is expected to improve road connectivity, promote business, and boost the economy of the state. With faster travel and better roads, the Samruddhi Mahamarg is set to make a big difference for people and businesses alike.
