How will Katra-Banihal Vande Bharat's Revised Speed Benefit Passengers?

The increase in speed is expected to reduce travel time for passengers travelling between Katra and Banihal. It is also aimed at improving rail connectivity in Jammu and Kashmir and making journeys faster and more convenient.

Earlier, trains on the Katra-Sangaldan section were permitted to operate at a maximum speed of 85 kmph. On the Sangaldan-Banihal section, the permitted speed was 75 kmph. The Railway Ministry approved the increase to 100 kmph after the Railways completed the required safety checks and fulfilled the prescribed safety conditions.

The Katra-Banihal section is an important part of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project. The route passes through challenging mountainous terrain and includes major railway structures such as the Chenab Railway Bridge and Anji Khad Railway Bridge. It also has 33 tunnels.

The Chenab Railway Bridge, located in Reasi district, is the world's highest railway bridge and stands 359 metres above the riverbed. A Vande Bharat train has previously clocked nearly 100 kmph while crossing the bridge during operations on the section.
According to railway officials, the higher speed will strengthen connectivity, reduce journey time and provide passengers with faster, safer and more comfortable travel. The move is also expected to support tourism, trade and economic activity in Jammu and Kashmir.
