Residents in Gurgaon & Delhi Demand Extension of the Kirti Nagar-Palam Metro Corridor

Residents living in the newer sectors of Gurgaon and Delhi's Dwarka have demanded that the proposed Kirti Nagar-Palam Metro corridor be extended further to Dwarka and the Dwarka Expressway area. They said the extension is necessary due to increasing traffic congestion and the lack of dependable public transport between Delhi

and Gurgaon. A joint team from Dwarka Forum and Dwarka Expressway Gurugram Development Association recently met West Delhi MP, Kamaljeet Sehrawat. The group submitted requests seeking better metro and bus connectivity for people travelling between Dwarka, Dwarka Expressway, and Gurgaon.

Delhi Metro Line

Earlier this month, the Delhi government approved a new 9.9-km metro line between Kirti Nagar and Palam. The proposed route will have six stations, including Saraswati Garden, Mayapuri Industrial Area Phase III, IITM Janakpuri, and Sagarpur. Passengers will also get interchange facilities at Mayapuri and Palam stations.

Residents' Opinions

Residents said that rapid residential and commercial development along the Dwarka Expressway has sharply increased daily travel between Delhi and Gurgaon. However, public transport services have not expanded at the same pace. They believe that extending the metro line beyond Palam towards Dwarka and Dwarka Expressway would reduce traffic on major roads such as NH-48 and Dwarka Expressway. It would also help cut pollution levels and improve access to Gurgaon's business areas.
The delegation also highlighted the heavy rush on the Delhi Metro Blue Line and at Dwarka Sector 21 Metro station, especially during peak hours. They warned that future projects, including the redevelopment of Bijwasan railway station, could further increase passenger traffic in the area.

C K Rejimon said the demand for a Dwarka-Gurgaon metro corridor has existed for many years, but several project reports were rejected despite strong public demand. He added that although roads such as Dwarka Expressway and Urban Extension Road-II improved road travel, mass public transport has still been ignored.

Residents' Requests

The residents' groups also requested regular DTC bus services connecting Dwarka Sector 21 Metro station with sectors along Dwarka Expressway in Gurgaon. According to them, better bus services would offer affordable travel and improve last-mile connectivity.

Many residents said the lack of direct metro and bus links forces people to depend on private vehicles and expensive cab services. Gurgaon resident Bharat Nain said rising fuel prices have increased cab fares, making daily travel more costly.

During the meeting, Sehrawat assured the delegation that the concerns raised would be discussed with the concerned agencies. She also said that the Airport Metro extension to Gurgaon is currently in the final stages of approval.
