The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Chennai has issued an orange alert for heavy to very heavy rainfall across several parts of Tamil Nadu, including Chennai, as a low-pressure area is expected to form over the southeast Bay of Bengal between October 21 and 24, 2025. According to the India

Meteorological Department (IMD), districts such as Tiruvallur, Kanchipuram, Ranipet, Chengalpattu, Villupuram, and Chennai are likely to experience intense rainfall on October 22.
Advisory for Residents
In Chennai, the weather will stay mostly cloudy with moderate to heavy rain and possible thunderstorms in different parts of the city. Authorities have advised residents to remain indoors for safety, and the Tamil Nadu government is expected to declare a holiday for schools and colleges on October 22. However, an official announcement is yet to be made.
Severe Rainfall in Different Parts of Tamil Nadu
Meanwhile, several other districts in Tamil Nadu are already witnessing widespread rainfall. As of October 21, Tuticorin has been one of the worst-affected areas, recording over 8 cm of rain overnight. This has caused flooding and blocked several drains and roads. Other districts like Nilgiris, Erode, Theni, Virudhunagar, and Tirunelveli have also reported heavy rain as the northeast monsoon strengthens over the region.
Orange Alert in Some Districts
Moreover, Ramanathapuram, Thanjavur, Nagapattinam, Mayiladuthurai, and Cuddalore districts, along with the Union Territories of Puducherry and Karaikal, are also under orange alert for heavy to very heavy rainfall. The IMD has forecast increased rainfall activity over coastal Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal for the next four days. Residents are advised to stay cautious, avoid unnecessary travel, and follow weather updates closely as authorities continue to monitor the developing system over the Bay of Bengal.
