The Rajouri-Nowshera Highway, a major infrastructure project in Jammu and Kashmir, is close to completion, promising to transform travel in this scenic region. This highway is expected to make a significant impact by connecting districts such as Jammu, Rajouri, and Poonch, which will benefit residents, tourists, and local businesses alike.

Enhanced Connectivity and Development
One of the primary goals of the Rajouri-Nowshera Highway is to boost connectivity between Jammu and Poonch districts, cutting travel time and making it easier for people to access remote areas. This improved access could open up these regions for tourism, helping visitors discover the natural beauty of this part of India. The enhanced road will also provide much-needed support to the local economy by making transport of goods faster and more reliable, benefiting local industries and services.
The new highway is also expected to bring development to border areas. These regions often face challenges due to limited infrastructure, and this project aims to change that by creating better roads and reliable transportation. For locals, it means better access to facilities, while for travelers, it offers a smoother journey through the scenic landscapes of Jammu and Kashmir.
Key Features of the Highway
A standout feature of the highway is a 350-meter wire duct flyover in Bathuni village, located in the Rajouri district. This flyover will help shorten the travel distance by around two kilometers, enhancing efficiency and saving time for commuters.
Another remarkable addition is the Nowshera Tunnel. This 700-meter tunnel will ensure smooth vehicular movement, even in bad weather, allowing the highway to remain operational year-round. The tunnel is part of the larger 200-kilometer stretch that connects Jammu with Poonch. Its completion is a key achievement for the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) under Project Sampark, aimed at upgrading National Highway-144A.
Important Tunnels Along the Highway
The Rajouri-Nowshera Highway includes several other tunnels to enhance connectivity:
- Kandi Tunnel: Part of the vital route connecting Akhnoor to Poonch.
- Sungal Tunnel: Spanning 2,790 meters, this major tunnel links Bhambla and Akhnoor on the Jammu-Rajouri-Poonch National Highway.
- Bhimber Gali Tunnel: Another essential tunnel on this route that helps reduce travel time and improve road connectivity.
Together, these tunnels are crucial for making transportation faster and more reliable, especially in regions where weather can often disrupt travel.
A New Chapter for Local Tourism and Economy
Once completed, the Rajouri-Nowshera Highway will not only serve local residents but also attract more visitors to Jammu and Kashmir. For the region's tourism, this means easier access to previously hard-to-reach areas, giving tourists a better chance to explore the natural beauty and cultural heritage of the state.
The Rajouri-Nowshera Highway stands as a symbol of progress, bringing new opportunities for growth, better connectivity, and a brighter future for Jammu and Kashmir.
