Recently, there has been misinformation spreading on social media platforms, WhatsApp groups, and various websites regarding restrictions on booking e-tickets due to different surnames. The Ministry of Railways has clarified that these claims are entirely false and misleading.

Background of the Issue
A news item started circulating without proper verification, claiming that there are limitations on booking e-tickets if the passengers have different surnames. This misinformation has caused confusion among rail users across the country.
Official Clarification by Ministry of Railways
The Ministry of Railways has officially debunked these rumors and provided the following clarifications:
1. Booking Guidelines: Tickets can be booked on the IRCTC site using personal User IDs for friends, family members, and relatives. There is no restriction based on surnames of passengers.
2. Booking Limits: Users can book up to 12 tickets per month using their personal User IDs. For Aadhaar-authenticated users, this limit can extend to 24 tickets per month, provided at least one passenger on the ticket is also Aadhaar-authenticated.
3. Commercial Sale Prohibition: It is emphasized that tickets booked on personal User IDs are strictly for personal use and should not be sold commercially. Any attempt to do so is considered an offense under Section 143 of the Railways Act, 1989.
In the past, similar misleading information about changes in railway policies has surfaced, causing confusion among passengers. For instance, in 2017, the Ministry of Railways clarified misinformation regarding new changes supposedly starting from July 1st, 2017.
Misinformation on social media and other platforms can create unnecessary confusion and panic among rail users. The Ministry of Railways urges passengers to rely on official announcements and guidelines available in the public domain. Booking e-tickets on IRCTC remains straightforward and accessible, with no restrictions based on surnames of passengers. It is essential for all passengers to be aware of their rights and responsibilities when booking railway tickets to ensure a smooth and hassle-free travel experience.
