Pune is set to see major transport improvements with a new railway line extension from Rajewadi station to the upcoming Purandar International Airport. This project is part of a larger plan to improve travel within Pune, Pimpri-Chinchwad, and the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) areas. The plan covers 2,550 square kilometers and will be completed in three phases at an estimated cost of ₹1.26 lakh crore.
New Railway Bypass for Smoother Travel
A key part of this project is the construction of a railway bypass to connect Talegaon and Daund railway stations. The first phase will introduce a feeder rail service between Talegaon and Shikrapur via Uruli Kanchan, which will later be extended to Daund. This will help improve regional rail services and ease train traffic.
Upgrading Railway Stations and Lines
The Rajewadi station, located on the Satara railway route, is expected to play a key role in improving access to the Purandar airport. A spur line will be developed from Rajewadi to the airport to make travel more convenient. Additionally, the authorities plan to broaden the Pune-Lonavala railway line, which will help manage traffic better.
Another major proposal is to shift the passenger terminal from Fursungi station (on the Pune-Miraj route) to Shindawane. This will ensure better train services and smoother passenger movement.
Improving Roads Around Purandar Airport
Along with railway expansion, several important roads leading to Purandar airport will also be improved. The roads to be upgraded include:
- Dive Ghat via Hadapsar-Saswad
- Saswad-Bopdev Road
- Uruli Kanchan-Jejuri Road
- Saswad-Kapurhol-Bhor Road
- Khed-Shivapur-Saswad Link Road
These road upgrades will help passengers travel more easily between Pune and the new airport.
