Pune Metro, which serves both Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad, has crossed a major milestone by carrying 10 crore (100 million) passengers since its operations on March 6, 2022, up to October 4, 2025. Shravan Hardikar, Managing Director of Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (Maha-Metro), stated that the metro has become a
fast, comfortable, and eco-friendly travel for citizens. He added that the team remains focused on completing the remaining routes and improving passenger services.
Pune Metro's Increased Ridership
Since its launch, Pune Metro's ridership has grown steadily with every new phase of expansion. When Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the first phase, covering PCMC to Phugewadi and Vanaz to Garware College, on March 6, 2022, the daily ridership was around 20,000 to 30,000 passengers. The second expansion, from Phugewadi to Civil Court and Garware College to Ruby Hall Clinic, opened on August 1, 2023, boosting daily ridership to about 1 lakh to 1.1 lakh passengers.
Further growth came with the completion of the East-West corridor from Ruby Hall Clinic to Ramwadi on March 6, 2024, when the daily ridership increased to 1.2-1.3 lakh. The biggest rise happened after the underground section from the District Court to Swargate opened on September 29, 2024, which increased daily ridership to nearly 1.6-2 lakh passengers.
The continuous rise in metro usage highlights the metro's importance for urban travel in Pune. With every new corridor, more commuters are shifting from road transport to the metro, helping reduce traffic and pollution. The Pune Metro has not only made city travel faster and more convenient but also marked an important step toward a cleaner, more sustainable urban future.
