Although the plan was to start services at only 12 stations earlier, the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) now plans to open 17 of the corridor's 23 stations in the first phase. The Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS) has already cleared the first 12 stations for passenger operations. The safety regulator is expected to inspect five more stations next week, after which the expanded service can begin.

PMRDA Metropolitan Commissioner Abhijit Chaudhari said the authority is working to start passenger services after receiving all necessary safety clearances. The inauguration is likely to take place virtually at the end of September, although the exact date will depend on the CMRS clearance and the Prime Minister's schedule.
The 23.23-km Metro corridor will connect Hinjewadi and Shivajinagar, passing through important areas such as Wakad, Balewadi and Baner. The line is expected to provide an alternative to the busy Hinjewadi-Baner-Shivajinagar road network and improve connectivity between Pune's IT hub and central Pune.

Six Stations to Remain Closed Initially

Six stations will not open during the initial phase as construction work and required safety clearances are still pending, including Laxmi Nagar, Balewadi Phata, Baner Gaon, Baner, Reserve Bank of India and Shivajinagar. Officials said starting services at the cleared stations will allow passengers to use the corridor without waiting for the entire project to be completed. The first 12 stations had earlier been targeted for a June-end launch, but the opening was delayed.
