Work to expand the Metro network in Pune is moving faster, with authorities now planning to extend the line beyond the city to Wagholi. This new extension is expected to make travel easier and faster for daily commuters.

Joint Inspection of Metro Corridor
On Sunday, officials carried out a joint inspection of the proposed 12.5-km Metro corridor between Ramwadi and Wagholi. The Metro line is planned to be built on the second level of the Pune-Shirur elevated highway. The inspection was led by MLA Dnyaneshwar Katke, along with officials from MahaMetro, traffic police, and other departments. During the visit, the team checked the route alignment and studied ground conditions to finalise important project details.
Metro Corridor Stations
The corridor will have 11 Metro stations, designed to improve access in key areas along the route. These stations have been planned based on passenger demand, ease of access, and future development in nearby localities. Officials also discussed technical challenges and traffic management during construction. MahaMetro Director Atul Gadgil said the project will use a 10-metre-wide space, with equal width on both sides of the road's centre.
A major focus will be to keep traffic running smoothly during construction. Authorities plan to ensure that at least two vehicle lanes and space for pedestrians remain open at all times. To support the project, the existing road will be widened. This step is necessary to handle both construction work and daily traffic without major problems. If all approvals are received on time, the project is expected to be completed within three years.
Once finished, the Metro extension will reduce traffic on Nagar Road, improve connectivity to IT hubs and residential areas, and provide a faster, more reliable travel option.
