In response to the increasing demand for better public transport, Pune Metro is set for major expansion. Managing Director Shravan Hardikar and Municipal Commissioner Rajendra Bhosale recently discussed plans to extend the metro network and improve traffic management in the city. To move forward, Bhosale has been asked to prepare a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the new metro expansions. This step aims to make travel easier and more convenient for Pune residents.

One of the key projects planned is the metro extension from Kharadi to Pune International Airport. This new route will be a part of the Khadakwasla-Swargate-Hadapsar-Kharadi corridor. The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has been instructed to create a DPR for this extension, showing a strong commitment to connecting major city areas directly to the airport. This will help travelers move smoothly between different parts of Pune and the airport.
Kharadi is expected to become an important transport hub with multiple metro connections. Once completed, passengers will have direct metro access to Pune Airport from key areas, including:
- Chandani Chowk to Wagholi
- Nigdi to Swargate
- Shivajinagar to the Airport
- Hinjawadi to Shivajinagar
- Khadakwasla to Swargate to Hadapsar
These connections will greatly improve Pune's transport system and make daily travel easier for thousands of commuters.
To reduce traffic congestion, authorities have also proposed a double-decker flyover along the Vanaz to Chandani Chowk corridor. Inspired by the Nal Stop flyover, this structure will help ease traffic flow and complement the metro expansion, making travel smoother and more efficient.
The Pune Metro expansion project is an important step toward a better public transport system. By extending metro routes, reducing traffic congestion, and improving connectivity, Pune is set to offer a modern and efficient travel experience for its residents and visitors. This project highlights Pune's commitment to smart urban planning and improved mobility solutions.
