More people will soon be able to travel on Pune Metro as the system plans to introduce six-coach trains on its existing routes. This move is being made to handle the expected rise in passenger numbers once the new Hinjewadi-Shivajinagar Metro corridor becomes operational in the coming months.

Pune Metro Services
Pune Metro currently operates on Line 1 between PCMC and Swargate and Line 2 between Vanaz and Ramwadi. These routes were opened in phases from March 2022 to September 2024. Together, they cover 33.28 km across the city, with most of the route elevated and about 5 km running underground.
Pune Metro Hinjewadi to Shivajinagar Line
The upcoming Line 3, a 23-km route from Maan Hinjewadi to Shivajinagar, is expected to begin operations soon. It will connect the Rajiv Gandhi Infotech Park in Hinjewadi with the city centre at Shivajinagar. Passengers will also be able to switch between Line 3 and the existing Metro lines, making travel easier and more convenient.
Pune Metro Ridership
Metro ridership has been growing steadily. In March 2026, the average daily ridership on Lines 1 and 2 reached 1.87 lakh passengers. According to Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (Maha-Metro) Managing Director Shravan Hardikar, daily ridership is expected to increase to between 2.75 lakh and 3 lakh passengers after Line 3 opens. To meet this growing demand, Pune Metro plans to purchase six-coach trains, replacing the current three-coach train system.
Pune Metro Corridors
At present, 18 three-coach trains operate on the Vanaz-Ramwadi corridor, while 16 trains run on the PCMC-Swargate route. Metro officials also plan to add 15 more trains to the east-west corridor and 12 more to the north-south corridor.
To support the larger trains, Pune Metro will expand its depots at Vanaz and Range Hill. Meanwhile, work has already begun on extending existing Metro lines to Nigdi, Katraj, Chandni Chowk, and Wagholi. Construction of the new Line 4, connecting Khadakwasla and Kharadi through key city areas, is also expected to begin soon.
