Residents of Wagholi, Pune, have long awaited metro connectivity, and their wait is finally over. The central government has approved a new metro route between Wagholi and Ramwadi as part of Pune Metro Phase 2. According to Pune Mirror, construction will soon commence on this 11.66 km line from Ramwadi to Vitthalwadi (Wagholi), featuring 13 elevated stations.
The project comes with a hefty price tag of Rs 3,626 crore, funded by both central and state governments. Once completed, the metro is expected to significantly ease travel for Wagholi residents. This development has been warmly received by many in Pune who see it as a positive step forward.
Challenges Persist Despite Metro Plans
Despite the metro's promise, Wagholi residents continue to face daily challenges. The area's roads are in disrepair, with a road-widening initiative stalled for nearly three years. Additionally, broken drainage systems and an unreliable water supply add to their woes.
Waste collection remains inconsistent, and safe footpaths are lacking, posing risks for children walking to school and individuals heading to hospitals. These issues persist even as the number of vehicles increases, exacerbating traffic congestion on Nagar Road and Lonikand Road.
Local Sentiments on Development
Many locals feel that while the metro is a welcome development, it alone won't solve all their problems. Snehal Mohite, a resident of Wagholi, expressed concerns: "We still don't get regular water, the roads are terrible, and waste isn't picked up on time. Things might actually get worse before the metro is ready."
For years, promises of development in Wagholi have often led to little tangible change. While the metro represents progress, it must be accompanied by improvements in infrastructure such as roads and essential services like water supply and waste management.
Infrastructure Needs Beyond Metro Connectivity
The increase in vehicles has worsened traffic conditions on major roads like Nagar Road and Lonikand Road. During monsoons, these roads often flood, resembling swimming pools rather than streets. Residents hope that alongside the metro project, authorities will address these pressing infrastructure needs.
The completion of the metro line is anticipated to bring relief to commuters; however, comprehensive urban planning is crucial for sustainable development in Wagholi. Addressing basic amenities alongside transport infrastructure will ensure holistic growth for the area.
This new phase of Pune Metro signifies progress but highlights the need for balanced urban development that addresses both transportation and fundamental civic issues faced by residents daily.
