The Union Cabinet, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved Phase 2 of the Pune Metro project. This phase will extend the existing Vanaz–Ramwadi line with two new routes: Vanaz to Chandani Chowk (Corridor 2A) and Ramwadi to Wagholi/Vitthalwadi (Corridor 2B).

These new routes will be fully elevated and stretch across 12.75 km, with 13 stations in total. They will connect fast-growing areas like Chandani Chowk, Bavdhan, Kothrud, Kharadi, and Wagholi. The project is expected to be completed in the next four years.
Cost and How It Will Be Funded
The total cost of the project is estimated at Rs 3,626.24 crore. This amount will be shared equally by the Central Government, the Maharashtra Government, and international funding agencies. The project is part of Pune’s larger mobility plan to improve east-west travel in the city.
Better Connectivity for the City
These new corridors will serve key zones like IT parks, colleges, business areas, and residential neighborhoods. This will make public transport easier and more efficient for everyone. The new lines will also connect with other metro routes—Line-1 (Nigdi–Katraj) and Line-3 (Hinjewadi–District Court)—at a common interchange near the District Court.
In the future, buses coming from cities like Mumbai and Bengaluru will connect to the metro at Chandani Chowk. Wagholi will also become a hub for buses arriving from places like Ahilya Nagar and Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar, making it easier for people to switch between bus and metro travel.
Expected Increase in Ridership
When completed, the new metro lines are expected to see around 96,000 passengers daily by 2027. This number is projected to grow to over 3.49 lakh by 2057, showing the long-term impact of the project on public travel in Pune.
Work Already Underway
The Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (Maha-Metro) will manage the construction and development. They’ve already started groundwork like land surveys and design planning. Once finished, these metro extensions will help reduce traffic on busy roads like Paud Road and Nagar Road, offering residents a faster, cleaner, and more comfortable way to travel across the city.
