Maha Metro to Build Pune Metro Corridors as a Part of the Phase 2 Expansion Project

The Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited has begun selecting agencies to build two new Metro corridors in Pune as part of the Phase 2 expansion project. The new lines will pass through busy areas such as Dattawadi, Sinhagad Road, Kothrud, and Warje, helping improve public transport and reduce traffic congestion.

The first corridor will run from Dandekar Bridge to Khadakwasla. It will be about 9.67 km long and will have eight elevated Metro stations. Most of this route will follow the existing Sinhagad Road, which is one of the city's busiest roads. The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has already made provisions for Metro pillars at flyovers and has planned space for station entry and exit points.

The second corridor will connect SNDT Chowk on Karve Road to Warje-Manikbaug. This 7.24-km elevated route will have six Metro stations and pass through important locations such as Karve Putala Chowk, Dahanukar Colony Chowk, and Warje. Maha Metro and PMC officials have already held several meetings to finalise station locations and route details.

The Central Government approved both projects last year, covering a total of 17 km. Preliminary surveys, including station planning and viaduct alignment, have already started.

The Dandekar Bridge-Khadakwasla section is part of the larger Kharadi-Hadapsar-Swargate-Khadakwasla Metro corridor. However, Maha Metro has decided to construct this stretch first, while the remaining section towards Hadapsar will be taken up separately in the future.

Residents have welcomed the Move

Residents and daily commuters have welcomed the project. People travelling on Sinhagad Road and Karve Road often face heavy traffic, especially during peak hours. They believe the Metro will provide a faster and more reliable travel option throughout the year.

Maha Metro officials said that although the tender process has begun, the project still needs to complete several administrative procedures before construction starts. Once the contract is awarded, the construction of both Metro lines is expected to be completed in around three-and-a-half years.
