The State Names Authority, led by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, has changed the names of nine metro stations in Delhi. The authority reviewed proposals to rename 21 stations. Out of these, 12 names were kept the same, seven were modified, and two were completely renamed, according to a statement from

the Chief Minister's Office. Rekha Gupta said the final names were chosen by keeping public feelings and local identity in mind.
Modified Station Names
The stations with modified names are: Uttari Pitampura-Prashant Vihar (earlier Prashant Vihar), Jagatpur-Wazirabad (earlier Jagatpur), Nanak Pyau-Derawal Nagar (earlier Derawal Nagar), Khanpur-Vayusainabad (earlier Khanpur), Nanaksar-Sonia Vihar (earlier Sonia Vihar), Shri Ram Mandir Mayur Vihar (earlier Mayur Vihar Pocket 1), and Mangolpur Kalan-West Enclave (earlier West Enclave).
Moreover, North Pitampura has been renamed Haiderpur Village, and Pitampura has been renamed Madhuban Chowk to better match the identity of the local areas.
Metro Stations with No Name Change
The names that were kept as originally proposed in the detailed project reports are: Majlis Park, Bhalaswa, Haiderpur Badli Mor, Deepali Chowk, Yamuna Vihar, Bhajanpura, Khajuri Khas, Soorghat, Jharoda Majra, Burari, Pushpanjali, and Maujpur-Babarpur.
Why was this Step Necessary?
The chief minister explained that metro stations are not just travel points. They also represent the culture and identity of the neighborhoods they serve. She said that each name was finalized only after careful discussion. Important factors like the local identity of the area, its historical, social, and cultural importance, and suggestions from public representatives and citizens were considered before making the final decision. Gupta also added that similar proposals may be reviewed in the future if they are reasonable and supported by the public.
