Prime Minister Narendra Modi has inaugurated India's first Vande Bharat Sleeper train, marking an important step in modernising long-distance rail travel. This new train will run between Howrah, near Kolkata, and Kamakhya Junction in Guwahati, providing a fast overnight connection between West Bengal and Assam. The Prime Minister flagged off

the train from Malda Town in West Bengal and also virtually launched the return service from Guwahati to Howrah.
Vande Bharat Sleeper Train
The Vande Bharat Sleeper train has been developed to meet the needs of today's travellers by offering speed, comfort, and safety at affordable prices. It is fully air-conditioned and designed to give passengers an experience similar to air travel, but at railway fares. One of the biggest advantages of this service is the reduced travel time. The train will cut around 2.5 hours from the Howrah-Guwahati journey, making long-distance travel more convenient. This improvement is also expected to support tourism and religious travel in the region.
Vande Bharat's Performance
The train is built to reach a top speed of 180 kmph, although it will usually operate at around 120-130 kmph. Passenger comfort has been given special attention. The sleeping berths have ergonomic designs, and the train uses a high-quality suspension system to ensure a smooth and pleasant ride, even on long journeys.
Features of Vande Bharat
Hygiene is another key focus. The train is using advanced disinfectant technology that can eliminate up to 99 percent of germs. Passengers will also be provided with clean, updated linens and towels. Safety has been strengthened with the installation of the indigenous Kavach automatic train protection system, along with full onboard surveillance. Automatic sliding doors will remain closed during the journey and open only at stations, adding an extra layer of security.
The train will also serve local cuisine on board, included in the ticket price. Passengers travelling from Kamakhya to Howrah will enjoy Assamese dishes, while those travelling from Howrah to Kamakhya will be served popular Bengali food, giving the journey a local cultural touch.
