Kerala's Tourism Department had big plans to promote caravan tourism by setting up caravan parks in scenic locations like Bolgatty, Bekal, and Ponmudi Hill Station. These parks were to be developed through a Public Private Partnership (PPP) model, encouraging private investments to boost tourism. Ponmudi, a beautiful hill station, was chosen as one of the key locations to attract tourists looking for adventure in unexplored areas.

Ponmudi Caravan Park Faces Land Issues
However, the Ponmudi caravan park project has hit a major roadblock. The land identified for the park is too small to fit the required number of five to six caravans. The available space could only accommodate two caravans, making it unsuitable for the project. Due to this issue, the Tourism Department has decided to drop the plan for Ponmudi and is now searching for alternative locations near Thiruvananthapuram** to set up the park.
Challenges in Kerala's Caravan Tourism Initiative
The problem at Ponmudi is not the only challenge facing Kerala's caravan tourism initiative. Launched in 2021, the project, known as Keravan Kerala, has struggled to grow. A lack of proper caravan parks has slowed down its success, making it difficult for tourists to fully experience the unique travel concept. Caravan tourism is meant to help travelers explore less-visited destinations in a comfortable and exciting way, but the shortage of caravan parks has been a major issue.
New Efforts to Revive Caravan Tourism
To address these challenges, the Tourism Department has recently partnered with the Kerala Start-Up Mission (KSUM). They have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to bring fresh ideas and innovative solutions to make caravan tourism successful. This collaboration shows the department's commitment to making Kerala a top caravan tourism destination.
Despite the setbacks, the Tourism Department remains hopeful about the future of caravan tourism in Kerala. By exploring new locations in Thiruvananthapuram and other areas, and forming strong partnerships, they aim to build a network of caravan parks. These parks will provide an exciting travel option for both Indian and international tourists, allowing them to discover Kerala's hidden gems in a unique way.
