In good news for daily travelers, Mira-Bhayandar and Thane in Maharashtra are soon getting a new and modern transport system - a pod taxi service. The Mira-Bhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC) has already approved this project, including all surveys and clearances. Maharashtra Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik said that this new service will start soon and will give people a fast, affordable, and modern way to travel.
A Solution for Last-Mile Connectivity
Minister Sarnaik shared that the growing population in Thane, which has now crossed one million, is causing heavy traffic. With a new metro line expected to open by December, the pod taxis will help people easily reach their final destination from metro stations. He said this project is very useful for solving last-mile connectivity problems in busy areas.
Inspired by a Pilot Project in Vadodara
The idea for this pod taxi service came after a visit to Nutran EV Mobility's Futran Experience Centre in Vadodara, Gujarat. This visit was done under the guidance of Union Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari and Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. Inspired by the success in Gujarat, Minister Sarnaik decided to bring this model to Mira-Bhayandar and Thane. A location near JP Infrastructure in Mira-Bhayandar has been chosen for the launch of this service.
How the Pod Taxi Will Work
The pod taxi system will use small electric pods that run on elevated tracks supported by thin pillars. These tracks are built six meters above the ground and do not disturb regular road traffic. The pillars only take up less than one square meter of space. Each pod can carry up to 20 people and will move at a speed of 60 to 70 kilometers per hour. The pods are fully automatic and will be available all day and night.
The new pod taxis are also designed with high safety in mind. A gap of 25 meters will be kept between pods, and each pod will have a system to avoid collisions. The stations are small and easy to build, even in crowded places. The turning area of the pods is also very narrow, which makes it easier to use in many parts of the city. Since these pods run on electricity, they are also a clean energy solution for the environment.
This pod taxi project will not only help reduce traffic but also bring a modern and eco-friendly transport option to the people of Mira-Bhayandar and Thane.
