On August 10, 2025, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the much-awaited Yellow Line of Bengaluru's Namma Metro.
The new corridor connects R.V. Road Metro Station to Bommasandra, offering a major relief to commuters, especially those working in the city's IT hub. A key objective of the project is to ease the heavy traffic congestion at the infamous Silk Board junction.
At the same event, the Prime Minister flagged off three new Vande Bharat Express trains from Bengaluru, introducing routes between KSR Bengaluru and Belagavi, Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra and Amritsar, and Nagpur (Ajni) and Pune. These services are expected to significantly enhance regional connectivity and travel efficiency.
Yellow Line: Boosting Bengaluru's Metro Connectivity
Launched in 2017, the Yellow Line project faced multiple delays, missing its original December 2021 completion target due to land acquisition hurdles and the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite these setbacks, the new corridor is expected to significantly improve daily travel for thousands of employees in Electronic City.
Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar noted that most of the project's funding was provided by the state government, while alleging that the BJP-led Central government contributed only a small share. He appealed to Prime Minister Modi to extend greater financial support for Bengaluru's development.
Vande Bharat Express: Strengthening Regional Links
The new Belagavi-Bengaluru Vande Bharat Express will operate six days a week, departing Belagavi at 5:20 a.m. and reaching Bengaluru at 1:50 p.m. The return journey will begin at 2:20 p.m., arriving in Belagavi by 10:40 p.m. This high-speed service will enhance connectivity between key cities including Tumakuru, Davangere, and Hubballi.
Prime Minister Modi also inaugurated the groundwork for Namma Metro Phase 3 at the IIIT-B auditorium in Electronics City Phase 1. This phase features a 44.8-km Orange Line that will connect the western stretch of the ORR to Magadi Road, with completion targeted for 2029.
Political Friction Over Metro Expansion
The Yellow Line inauguration stirred political tensions, as Congress supporters gathered at Ragigudda Metro Station to back Deputy CM D.K. Shivakumar. Transport Minister Ramalinga Reddy accused BJP leaders of claiming undue credit for the project while downplaying the substantial role of the state government.
Echoing this sentiment, Karnataka MP Priyank Kharge stated that the state bore over ₹12,000 crores in costs for land acquisition and related expenses. He alleged that the BJP was "hijacking credit" despite contributing only a minimal share financially.
Technological Advancements and Future Prospects
According to a BMRCL official, the Yellow Line is equipped for driverless operations, though the initial phase will feature trains operated by drivers. The inaugural service, carrying Prime Minister Modi, was driven by a woman, who also engaged with schoolchildren during the trip.
During his Bengaluru visit, PM Modi praised India's technological progress and initiatives like Make in India, noting that digital connectivity now extends to every village. He further highlighted that India handles nearly half of the world's real-time UPI transactions, underscoring the nation's growing digital leadership.
Public Concerns Regarding Initial Service Limitations
Although the Yellow Line's launch was met with enthusiasm, some commuters voiced concerns about its limited frequency, with trains currently running every 25 minutes. Residents such as Murlidhar K.M. from BTM Layout questioned whether this schedule would meet peak-hour demand.
Kavya Kumari from Bommanahalli criticized what she described as a "ribbon-cutting culture," asking why full operations are delayed until next year if public transport is meant to serve people's needs ahead of political milestones.
Bengaluru's metro expansion will progress in parallel with smart city projects, aligning with Prime Minister Modi's vision for Atmanirbhar Bharat and Viksit Bharat. This vision focuses on improving citizens' lives through key reforms, including the Jan Vishwas Bill 2.0 and Mission Karmayogi.
