The first section of the Phase-2 metro, from Poonamallee Bypass to Vadapalani, covering 14.6 km, is likely to open in a few days. The Commissioner of Railway Safety has given the required approval to start operations. However, services will begin with some restrictions.

Chennai Metro Between Poonamallee Bypass and Porur Junction
According to Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL), trains will run every 15 minutes between Poonamallee Bypass and Porur Junction stations. Between Porur Junction and Vadapalani, only one train will operate in each direction at a time. The frequency on this stretch will be every 20 minutes. Trains will also run at a lower speed of 25 kmph, instead of the usual 35 kmph average speed.
Due to these limits, the journey from Poonamallee Bypass to Vadapalani is expected to take about 35 minutes. After reaching Vadapalani, Phase-2, passengers must use a skywalk to reach the Phase-1 Vadapalani metro station to change trains or exit.
Services between Porur Junction and Vadapalani
Although the CRS has approved the entire 14.6 km stretch, services between Porur Junction and Vadapalani can start only after 26 deck slabs are completed on the double-decker section of Corridor-5. This work is expected to be finished by March 25. CMRL said that while approval has been granted, the deck slab work must be completed before full commissioning.
Corridor 4 of Phase 2 Metro
This stretch is part of Corridor-4, which runs from Lighthouse to Poonamallee Bypass and covers 26.1 km. Corridor-4 is a section of the larger 118.1 km Phase-2 metro project, and the 14.6 km stretch has 17 elevated stations. However, when services begin, only 11 stations will open to the public, including 10 stations between Poonamallee Bypass and Porur Junction, along with Vadapalani station.
