PMRC Unveils Two-Phase Patna Metro Expansion, Extending to 9.322 km by August

The Patna Metro Rail Corporation (PMRC) has announced a major plan to expand the city's metro network, which is expected to greatly improve public transport in Patna in the coming years. At present, metro services are running on only a small section. By August, the operational length of the metro is expected to increase to 9.322 kilometres, officials said.

Patna Metro Expansion

To support this expansion, PMRC plans to lease three-coach metro trains from Pune Metro. These trains will operate on the route between Mithapur and the Inter-State Bus Terminal (ISBT). This step is expected to reduce crowding and make daily travel easier, especially for passengers commuting between the busy bus terminal and Mithapur, a major business and commercial area of the city.

Metro Expansion in Two Phases

The metro expansion has been planned in two phases. The first phase is expected to be completed by February. Under this phase, the metro line will be extended from the current endpoint at Bhootnath station to Malahi Pakri. With this extension, the operational length of the metro will increase to 6.107 kilometres.

Pending Technical Work

Some technical work is still pending at Khemnichak station, so trains will not stop there during the first phase. This station will become operational only in the second phase. Once the full stretch up to Mithapur becomes functional by August, Khemnichak station will also open for passengers. This will improve metro access for nearby densely populated areas such as Jaganpura and Ramkrishna Nagar.

Khemnichak Metro Station

Khemnichak station will play an important role in the metro network, as it will act as an interchange between Corridor-1 and Corridor-2. Although the track levels of the two corridors are different, the platforms will be built at the same height. This will allow passengers to change trains easily between routes leading to Ford Hospital and the New Patliputra Bus Terminal.

Moreover, this metro expansion is a major step towards modernising Patna's public transport system and reducing traffic congestion across the city.
