Onam, celebrated from August 26 to September 5, 2025, is one of Kerala's most vibrant festivals. A key highlight of the celebrations is Vallam Kali, the traditional snake boat race, where Kerala's serene backwaters transform into thrilling racecourses. The term Vallam Kali literally means "boat play." These races feature the famous chundan valloms or snake boats, nearly 100 feet in length with their iconic raised bows. Nehru Trophy Boat Race
The most renowned of them all is the Nehru Trophy Boat Race, held annually on Punnamada Lake in Alappuzha. First inaugurated by Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru in 1952, it continues to be a major attraction. This year, the event is scheduled for August 30.
Payippad Boat Race
Another prominent race is the Payippad Boat Race, conducted on the Payippad River across three days. Known for drawing the largest number of snake boats, the event commemorates the discovery and installation of Lord Subramanya's idol at the Subramanya Swamy Temple. For 2025, it will be held from September 5 to 7, drawing massive crowds.
Aranmula Uthrittathi Boat Race
The oldest river boat festival in Kerala is the Aranmula Uthrittathi Boat Race, which unfolds on the Pamba River. Deeply associated with the Aranmula Parthasarathy Temple, this sacred event features palliyodams-larger ceremonial boats capable of carrying up to 15 people in the center. In 2025, it is set for September 9.
