Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) has started a hydrology study to explore ferry operations through the Chengal canal, located near Cochin International Airport. The study aims to understand the canal's water flow and structure to see if it can be developed into a key water transport link connecting Aluva to

the airport. Earlier, KMRL had conducted a feasibility study for launching a Water Metro service from Aluva to the airport at Nedumbassery. This new hydrology study will assess whether the canal can support frequent ferry services. The idea for this route came after strong public demand for Water Metro services to extend to more areas of Kochi and its suburbs.
KMRL's Feasibility Study
According to Sajan P. John, Chief Operating Officer of Kochi Water Metro Ltd, the study will be completed within three months. Once done, KMRL will submit a detailed proposal to the state government for approval. After receiving the green light, development work on the canal can begin. The expansion of the Water Metro follows directions from the Union Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways, which has asked KMRL to study the feasibility of extending water transport systems across Kerala and other major Indian cities. The Aluva-airport route is seen as a promising alternative to ease road congestion and improve connectivity between Kochi Metro and the airport.
New Kochi Metro Service to Enhance Commutation
The new Water Metro service to Nedumbassery is expected to boost passenger movement for both the Kochi Metro and the airport. Besides the Chengal canal, other nearby rivers and backwaters will also be considered for inclusion. KMRL is also studying how to link Water Metro terminals with the Aluva Metro station and the airport, possibly through an aerial walkway. The 8 km route along the Periyar River may offer direct or stop-based services, giving the airport seamless road, rail, and waterway access.
